Belle Meade, Tennessee is in Davidson County, a historic area located south of downtown Nashville. It operates independently as a city, but it is integrated with Nashville government as well. The city’s history began in 1807 when John Harding bought Dunham’s Station log cabin along with 250 acres near Richland Creek. He named his land Belle Meade, which means beautiful meadow in French. Harding built a mansion, established a Thoroughbred breeding operation, as well as building a grist and saw mill, blacksmith shop and cotton gin on his property. When his son inherited the land and businesses, they were renamed the Belle Meade Plantation. Eventually, the land was sold, and streets and a neighborhood were developed, establishing the City of Belle Meade in 1938. The mansion became a museum and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Some 3,000 people call Belle Meade home.
The Belle Meade Plantation is a popular tourist attraction in the community. The 1835 Greek-Revival mansion features period-dressed guides that provide 45-minute tours. With stories of the Harding and Jackson families and the history of all it took to establish the Thoroughbred farm, visitors learn of the many people that were a part of the Belle Meade Plantation in its 100-year history. Visitors are also treated to wine tasting and an ice cream and fudge shop that has been set up inside a refurbished chicken coop. There are also a variety of activities the whole family can enjoy, like the Adventure backpacks and a Segway tour of the grounds. As a museum, the site is dedicated to remaining a source of education and preservation of Tennessee’s Victorian architecture, equestrian history, and local history. The site is also available for cultural events and weddings.
Belle Meade real estate options include mansions in wooded areas and homes with large lawns. In addition to the sprawling Belle Meade estates, there are cottages and ranch style homes as well as the older Victorian homes in this historical area. There is one modest shopping strip mall in Belle Meade, and the many amenities of Nashville are within close distance.
